How to use these kitchen conversions

US recipes measure by volume, and the whole system nests neatly once you know the anchors: 1 cup = 16 tablespoons = 48 teaspoons = 8 fluid ounces ≈ 237 ml, and 1 tablespoon = 3 teaspoons. That last relationship is the one worth memorizing — mixing up the tablespoon (tbsp/T) and teaspoon (tsp/t) abbreviations triples or thirds an ingredient and is the classic reason a batch of cookies comes out wrong. For anything larger, the liquid ladder halves at every step: 1 gallon = 4 quarts = 8 pints = 16 cups.

Volume conversions like these hold for any ingredient, wet or dry, because they only describe the size of the measure. Weight is a different story. A cup of all-purpose flour is about 120 grams, but a cup of granulated sugar is roughly 200 grams and a cup of honey is around 340 grams — same volume, very different mass — because grams measure how much stuff is actually in the cup. That is also why dry ingredients are spooned in and leveled off with a straight edge, while liquids are read at eye level in a spouted cup: scooping flour straight from the bag packs in up to 25% extra. When a recipe really needs to be repeatable, weigh the dry ingredients with the cups ↔ grams converter instead of trusting the scoop.

To resize a recipe, the recipe scaler does the arithmetic for you: paste your ingredient list, set the original servings and the target servings, and every quantity is rescaled into practical kitchen fractions. To halve a recipe, set target servings to half the original (4 → 2); to double it, set them to twice the original (4 → 8). Two things don't scale in a straight line, though — you'll need a larger pan (not just more time) for a doubled cake, and at 3× and beyond it's smart to hold back on salt, spices, and leavening at first, then adjust to taste. For oven settings, use the °F ↔ °C pages: the formula is (°F − 32) × 5⁄9 = °C, so 350°F lands at 177°C, which you set as 175°C, gas mark 4, or about 160°C on a fan oven.

How many teaspoons are in a tablespoon?
3 teaspoons make 1 tablespoon (about 15 ml). So a half tablespoon is 1½ teaspoons.

What is 350°F in Celsius?
350°F is 177°C exactly. On an oven dial that's 175°C, gas mark 4, or roughly 160°C for a fan/convection oven, which runs about 20°C hotter.

How do I scale a recipe for more (or fewer) servings?

Why doesn't a cup of flour weigh the same as a cup of sugar?
